As part of the event, we will once again organize masterclasses and concerts throughout the year. The application deadline for the 2026 competition is April 10, 2026. COMPETITION HISTORY
The international music competition BOLERO was first held in 2021 at the Private Music School Muta. The event welcomed 40 competitors from 20 Slovenian and 3 international music schools, performing before a renowned international jury from Slovenia and Croatia.
In 2022, the competition moved to Bukovje Manor, where brass instruments were added to the existing percussion category. The number of participants grew to over 130 competitors from five countries, with a professional jury from Slovenia, Austria, and Croatia.
Since 2023, the competition has included percussion, brass, and woodwind instruments, thus encompassing all sections of a wind orchestra. It has been held in the new concert hall of the Kienhofen Manor in Muta, where over thousand young musicians from twelve countries have performed over the past three years: Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, Austria, Germany, Ukraine, France, Poland, Hungary, Turkey, and Russia.
Beyond the competitive performances, BOLERO also serves as a platform for professional development. Each year, we organize masterclasses led by our jury members, aimed at fostering knowledge exchange between educators and young musicians. In 2025, we expanded our educational offerings with the first Trumpet academy, led by renowned Slovenian trumpeter Jure Gradišnik.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
International Music Competition BOLERO is intended for young percussionists, brass players and woodwind players of all nationalities up to the age of 15 and is organized with the aim of encouraging professional pedagogical growth in the field of percussion, brass and woodwinds in Slovenia and beyond, as well as in an effort to encourage young musicians to deepen their musical and artistic activities. For these reasons, when organizing our competition, we strive to ensure that competitors leave our our place with their heads held high, with fond memories and good, useful experiences.
The evaluation system of our competition is set up differently than we are used to from other, similar events, in such a way that it is friendly to all competitors. Together with our sponsors, we once again managed to provide beautiful prizes for the highest ranked competitors, and most importantly, we managed to attract exceptional and internationally renowned jury, whose thinking about the purpose of such events is fully consistent with our endeavour and our goals.
OUR VISION
With international orientation, our competition encourages and contributes to the development of music culture, other arts and tourism in the region of Slovenian Carinthia and Slovenia. Our long term vision is to increase the scope of the project and to set one of the most important and most visible events of this nature in Slovenia and beyond.
