ABOUT COMPETITION

2. International Music Competition BOLERO is intended for young percussionists and brass players of all nationalities up to the age of 15, who are divided into different competition disciplines and categories according to their instrument and year of birth.

PERCUSSION categories will be held between May 23 and May 27, 2022 at the premises of Municipality Muta (Glavni trg 17, 2366 Muta, Slovenia).

OUR GOAL

International Music Competition BOLERO is organized with the aim of stimulating professional pedagogical growth in the field of percussion and brass in Slovenia and beyond, as well as in an effort to encourage young musicians to deepen their musical and artistic activities. With its international orientation, the competition encourages and contributes to the development of music culture, other arts and tourism in the municipality of Muta, a region of Slovenian Carinthia and Slovenia.

The competition will be held in different categories for percussion solo or percussion accompanied by the piano or audio recording. The participants of the competition will be divided into categories according to the year of birth, namely:

  • Junior Category – born in 2013 and later
  • 1st Category – born in 2011 and 2012
  • 2nd Category – born 2009 and 2010
  • 3rd Category – born in 2007 and 2008

The competitors may apply for their own or a higher age category. The candidate is only allowed to compete in one of the categories

Junior Category – two pieces or more, up to 4 minutes *

  • Pieces of own choice within the prescribed Programme Duration

1st Category – three pieces or more, up to 6 minutes *

  • Piece or Étude for snare drum of own choice
  • Piece for xylophone, marimba or vibraphone of own choice **
  • Pieces of own choice within the prescribed Programme Duration

2nd Category – three pieces or more, up to 9 minutes *

  • Piece or Étude for snare drum of own choice
  • Piece for xylophone, marimba or vibraphone of own choice **
  • Pieces of own choice within the prescribed Program Duration

3rd Category – three pieces or more, up to 12 minutes *

  • Piece or Étude for snare drum of own choice
  • Piece for xylophone, marimba or vibraphone of own choice **
  • Pieces of own choice within the prescribed Program Duration

Competitors can perform pieces for percussion solo, pieces for percussion with piano accompaniment and pieces for percussion with audio tape on all instruments. August Förster concert piano and sound system (USB, CD) are available in the hall.

* Programme Duration apply to the entire programme of the competitor. The performance of a competitor exceeding the duration of the prescribed Program Duration may be interrupted by a Jury. In such case, the performance will be evaluated up to the point of Jury interruption. The competitor will not be charged with any kind of penalty.

** Pieces for xylophone, marimba or vibraphone are to be performed by heart.

Changes to the programme are possible until the deadline for application. The application deadline is May 6th, 2021.

The organizer of the competition does not provide a pianist/piano accompaniment for competitors.

The organizer of the competition does not ask the participants for original scores. Criminal liability for the forbidden copying and distribution of scores shall be borne by the competitor or his parents/guardians.

Competitors and mentors are advised to choose a technically and character-diverse repertoire, with which each participant in the competition presents himself as comprehensively as possible.

The Jury consists of internationally recognized educators and musicians from at least two countries. If the members of the Jury are in family or pedagogical relations with the competitor, they do not evaluate the latter or their score is not taken into account in the sum of the results. The Jury independently evaluates the contestants with points from 0 to 100 and decides on the awarding of special prizes. Key elements of performance, that are to be evaluated or taken into account from jury are technical readiness, correctness of the performance (scores), musicality and overall impression of the participant of the competition. Competitors and mentors are advised to choose a technically and character-diverse repertoire, with which each participant in the competition presents himself as comprehensively as possible. According to the results of the Jury members, the average is calculated, based on which awards, plaques or awards are given to the participants of the competition. The results of the Jury are final and are published on the board at the competition venue and on the online platforms used by the event organizer for advertising purposes.  A list with results is signed by the Jury members and the competition leader. The results of the Jury cannot be appealed.

After each competition day, jury members will be available for a brief interview with the contestants who performed that day.

Jury members will be published separately for each edition of the competition on the website (www.bolero-competition.com).

In each category, participants will receive:

  • Gold plaque with praise for achieving 95,00 to 100 points;
  • Gold plaque for achieving 90,00 to 94,99 points;
  • Silver plaque for achieving 85,00 to 89,99 points;
  • Bronze plaque for achieving 80,00 to 84,99 points;
  • Recognition of participation for achieving 79,99 points and below.

International Music Competition BOLERO is organized in the effort to encourage young percussionists to deepen their musical and artistic activities, regardless of their current position in comparison with their peers. For this reason, the assessment points achieved by each individual and the exact order of the competitors for a certain category (with the exception of winning an award in each category) will not be published. This type of public results announcement maintains the transparency of the competition, and at the same time positively protects the lower placed participants of the competition.

Every participant of the competition has the right to discuss the results with the Jury. After each competition day, jury members will be available for a brief interview with the contestants who performed that day. The order will remain anonymous.

Junior Category

Each participant in the Junior Category category receives a practical prize in addition to a plaque or recognition for participation. The order of the competitors remains anonymous.

The jury selects the most promising young percussionist from the contestants in the Junior Category. In addition to the plaque or the award, the most promising young percussionist awardee receives a hand-made cajon from a young Slovenian family-owned company »DP Cajon« in the value of 350 EUR.

1st, 2nd and 3rd Category

In 1st, 2nd and 3rd Category, regardless of the points scored for the first, second and third place, candidates receive a laureate in addition to the plaque:

  • First place award
  • Second place award
  • Third place award

In case that two or more participants of the competition are equally evaluated (points achieved) in one of the first three places, the prize is awarded to the younger of the two or among all equally evaluated.

Recipients of I., II. in III. Prizes in all categories are awarded with practical prizes, which are published separately for each edition of the competition on the website (www.bolero-competition.com).

In 1st, 2nd and 3rd category, one participant is selected to receive the prize for the best performed snare drum SOLO piece in their category, regardless overall points achieved or final result. In addition to the plaque or the award, recipient receives a practical gift.

Plaques and prizes will be awarded at the Award Winning Ceremony, in the evening on the day of the competition, when the individual category or several categories are completed, depending on the number of participants of the competition. Competition participants will be informed about this at the same time as the official schedule is published on the competition website (www.bolero-competition.com) and on other online platforms (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube) used by the competition organizer.

Recipients of I., II. and III. Prizes in all categories, if selected by the Jury, are obliged to appear at the Prize and Award Giving Ceremony and perform part of the competition programme determined by the Jury. In case that the recipients of I., II. and III. Prizes refuse to cooperate at the Prize and Award Giving Ceremony, no reward will be given to them.

The organization of the competition reserves the right to make changes in the implementation of the awards ceremony. This is decided by the Head of the competition.

In the event that the competitors do not attend the Prize and Award Giving Ceremony, plaques and special prizes may be picked up at the address of The Private Music School »Melodija, Zasebna glasbena šola Muta d.o.o.«, by prior notice until 24th of June 2022. Plaques and special prizes are exceptionally sent by post. Shipping costs are covered by the participant of the competition or his guardians.*

The organization of the competition reserves the right to allow exceptions to the participants of the competition with major logistical problems. This is decided by the Head of the competition.

International Music Competition BOLERO for Percussion Categories will be held between May 23 and May 27, 2022 at the premises of Municipality Muta (Glavni trg 17, 2366 Muta, Slovenia). The official schedule of the competition will be published on the official website of the competition (https://www.bolero-competition.com) and other online platforms (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube), which are to be used by the organizer of the competition, no later than May 20th, 2022. Competitors will be notified/informed about the exact schedule and course of the competition via e-mail. Participants of the competition will perform in alphabetical order within the category to which they applied, based on the list of registered competitors from the initial letter of the surname »B«.*

Competitors must report to the competition headquarters no earlier than 60 minutes before the start of the category in which they are competing. If the schedule of an individual category is divided into several parts, the competitors will report to the competition headquarters 60 minutes before the start of the part of the category in which they are competing. Upon registration, the participants of the competition confirm the authenticity of the data from the application form with an identity document.

Each participant in the competition is assigned with a room 60 minutes before the start of the category on arrival, where they can prepare for the performance. Competitors who appear at the venue early, wait in the waiting room or outside the competition venue. The waiting rooms are not equipped with instruments, so we recommend that the participants of the competition have practice pads with them. Each participant in the competition is warned 10 minutes before the performance that his performance is approaching. A member of the group of organizers of the competition accompanies the competitor to the waiting room, directly in front of the entrance to the hall. When the previous competitor finishes his performance, a member of the organizing group invites him into the hall and announces his performance.

The hall of the Municipality of Muta, where the competition will take place, will be available for participants from 16th May 2022 until the start of the competition. During this time, each participant can book the hall for 45 minutes, during which they can test the instruments and get used to the acoustics of the hall. A schedule of short sound checks will be compiled for the competition day. The hall will be available to each participant of the competition for 5 – 10 minutes, depending on the number of participants in the competition. The sound check’s schedule will be known at the same time as the competition schedule, no later than May 20, 2022.

Competitors can perform pieces for snare drum, xylophone and vibraphone on their own instrument. If necessary, the participant of the competition can add his own effective cymbals or other smaller percussion instruments (cowbell, woodblock, temple block, tambourine, etc.) to a set of drums. In case that a competitor performs a piece for multi-percussion, he arranges the instruments himself. Due to the difficult transportation to the hall, pieces for other instruments are performed on the instruments listed above, which are provided by the event organizer for the purpose of the competition.

Recording and photographing during competitions performances is not allowed.

The organizer arranges official recordings and pictures of International Music Competition BOLERO. The official recordings and images of the competition can be obtained by the participants and their relatives or guardians with advance notice at the organizer headquarters at the latest by June 24th, 2022. Recordings and images are exceptionally sent by post. Shipping costs are covered by the participant of the competition or his guardians.

The competition is broadcasted live on internet platforms (Facebook, YouTube), that are used by the event organizer for advertising purposes.

The participants of the competition or their caretakers consent to the recording of their performance, editing and public publication of the images and videos. The obtained material will also be used for announcing results and to promote the event.

Company, responsible for recording and photographing the competitions performances is »Video Verdnik, Mitja Verdnik s.p«.

The organizers of the competition do not accept responsibility for personal injury of the participants of the competition and their companions during the International Music Competition BOLERO.

The organizers of the competition reserve the right to introduce changes and assume responsibility for all decisions within the International Music Competition BOLERO that are not defined in the competition rules.

The competition is open to the public. During the competition, the hall will receive a maximum of 20 listeners in addition to the Jury.

Each category is to be completed if there are at least 10 candidates applied. Otherwise, the category is not executed, and the amount of the application fee is returned to the applicants. Applicants will be informed of this no later than 10 days after the deadline for submission of the application.

The organizer of the competition, the jury, the participants of the competition and their mentors and accompanists are obliged to observe the rules and general conditions of the International Music Competition BOLERO, the competition schedule and instructions of the Head of the competition. Head of the competition is Andraž Likar, the representative of »AIDA, Andraž Likar s.p.«.

The organizer of the competition processes personal data in accordance with the provisions of the current privacy regulations. Any personal information supplied on registration and on competition entry shall be kept and used only for matters concerning the International Music Competition BOLERO and its promotion, as well as sending information and service communications. The retention period of personal data depends on the basis of the processing and the purpose of the processing of each category of personal data. Personal data shall be retained for as long as is necessary to achieve the purpose for which it was collected or further processed. Personal data shall be erased, destroyed, blocked or anonymized after the purpose of the processing is fulfilled, unless there is another legal basis or where it is necessary for the enforcement, enforcement or defense of legal claims.

The participants and their caretakers fully agree with the terms and conditions of the event when signing up for the International Music Competition BOLERO. They thereby consent to the recording and of their performance, editing and public publication of the personal data, images and videos. The obtained material will also be used for announcing results and to promote the event.

Application to the International Music Competition BOLERO is only possible through the application form published on the official website of the organizer of the competition (https://www.bolero-competition.com). To apply, please fill in the application by May 6th, 2022 at the latest.

Along with the electronic application form the participants must also submit a scan or copy of the below listed documents through the official webpage of the organization (PDF):

  1. ID card of the participant of the competition, together with the handwritten signatures of the competitor and the parents or. guardians;
  2. Payment Confirmation of the application fee;
  3. Complete scores of the competition programme*.

*For pieces that are to be accompanied by the piano the participant must submit copies of the piano scores from which the percussion part must be visible, or submit piano and percussion scores copies separately. These copies are for the attention of the Jury during the competition. After the competition the copies of these notes will be destroyed.

The applications that will be submitted without the obligatory documents will be filed as incomplete and the application will be invalid. The organiser will alert the applicant in case of an invalid application via e-mail. The application must be submitted correctly until 10th of May 2022, if not performing on the competition will be denied.

  • 1st Category – € 60.00
  • 2nd Category – € 70.00
  • 3rd Category – € 80.00

The application fee shall be paid via bank transfer, no later than 6th of May 2022. Instructions for payment can be found on the next page (page 8).
